A new report states that there is a strong relationship between alcohol use among youth and fighting, stealing, driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, skipping school, feeling depressed, and deliberately trying to hurt or kill themselves.
Several different studies have shown that alcohol use by youth increases the risk of both fatal and nonfatal injuries, particularly as related to automobile accidents; other consequences of youth alcohol use includes an increased risky sexual behaviors, poor school performance, and an increased risk of both suicide and homicide.
Alcoholism generally takes about 15 years to develop, but can happen much quicker in adolescents and young adults.
Alcohol abuse has been determined to be the primary factor in at least one third of all drowning incidents throughout the United States each year.
